Headache and Migraine Relief

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By Tommy Thompson So many of us suffer needlessly from headaches or migraines on a regular basis. The usual course of action has us reaching for quick relief in some form of pain killer such as Aspirin, Tylenol or Prescription Medication. As a long time headache sufferer, I can tell you these solutions are only temporary and can actually do more harm than good. Pain medication can become addictive and over time lose their effectiveness requiring the dosages to be increased in order to see any relief. The real solution lies in finding the cause of the headache in the first place. By finding and treating the underlying cause, we eliminate the reason for the pain. In most cases, headache pain is the way our body tells us there may be something wrong. It does not have to be serious or life threatening, headaches can come from stress or tension, poor diet, not enough rest, hormone fluctuations and anxiety or depression. Understanding your chronic headache or migraine allows you to fix the real problem. For instance, for a very long time I suffered from what I knew to be tension headaches from a very stressful job I had. My doctor gave me two options, leave my job or learn to deal appropriately with the stress so I did not give myself headaches on a regular basis. Since leaving my job at that time was not an option, I decided to find other methods. In my research for a safe and natural tension reducer, I learned that several herbs were said to have calming and soothing properties. This piqued my curiosity so I delved further into the world of herbal supplements and there benefits. I was so surprised to find that herbs have been effectively used for many common ailments since the dawn of time and they were still being used today. For instance, the herb Passiflora contains flavonoids and has been known to reduce anxiety and tension. Milk Thistle has been used as a liver tonic and restorative. Feverfew is an herb that has been known to be a very effective pain reliever.
So I decided to give herbal supplements a try, along with some breathing and meditation exercises. After years of suffering from regular headaches, I finally found relief. Of course there are many other types of headaches caused by many different factors. But identifying why you have a headache or migraine is definitely the first step in eliminating it. You should always see your doctor to rule out any serious illness if you suffer from chronic headaches or chronic migraines. Using Human Urine As A Liquid Fertilizer

Monday, June 9th, 2008

By Julie Williams OK, so are you over the shock now??? In the not so distant past, we didnt have the luxury of having a small room in the house where we could flush away our number ones and twos. But did you ever wonder how we managed before the water closet? Not that I want to get into the history of it, but lets just say that before the times of our current throw-away society, people thought of multiple uses for just about everything. Well maybe you didnt know that human urine is the fastest acting, most excellent source of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium and some trace elements. Not only that, but we all have a constant, year round supply of it and its free! Theres not a lot of effort involved in creating this wonderful organic liquid fertilizer. Some men I know are more than happy to oblige a tree, bush or lawn (out of view, of course). Did you know that many toilets use between 50 and 100 litres of water a day to flush around 1.5 litres of pee? And the high levels of nutrients in our effluent systems leads to the growth of algae, which ultimately causes the death of plants and animals throughout our waterways. What are the advantages of using urine as an organic liquid fertilizer? If youre not flushing this valuable liquid down the loo, you are reducing your water consumption good for the environment and your pocket Youll be reducing the amount of sewerage runoff Therell be less nutrients in our waterways Urine as a liquid fertilizer is available in an ideal chemical form for plants to use Gardening costs are less as your liquid fertilizer is free It is readily available all year round and there are no transportation costs Just so that you know, fresh human urine is sterile (unless there is a urinary tract infection this urine should not be used) and so free from bacteria. I recommend that you dilute urine to 10-15 parts water to 1 part urine for application on plants in the growth stage. Dilute to 30-50 parts water to 1 part urine for use on pot plants as they are much more sensitive to fertilizers of any kind. Trees, shrubs and lawn should cope well without dilution. Withhold the use of urine liquid fertilizer on all food plants at least two weeks before harvesting. Apply under fruiting plants, not directly on foliage. Dont use urine older than 24hours on your plants as the urea turns into ammonia and will burn your plants. If its not fresh, add it to your compost heap. Adding undiluted human urine to your compost heap will help heat it up quickly as it is an excellent activator and will add to the final nutrient value. As far as antibiotics, vitamin supplements and other medications go, yes they will end up in your urine, but in such minute quantities that I believe to be negligible especially when it is diluted. So put this excellent source of free liquid fertilizer to good use in your garden, rather than add to the burden that we as humans cause to our environment. Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. The New Rage: Incentive Trusts

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

By Michael Pancheri Today’s baby boomers want more out of their estate planning than just passing along an inheritance to their children. They also want to pass along their values - and they’re using incentive trusts to do just that. Incentive trusts do more than protect a child’s inheritance until the child is old enough - and mature enough - to handle the money. They actually go one step further - they use the inheritance as sort of a reward for doing the right thing. For example, a traditional trust would hold an inheritance until a child was, say age 25. At that time, it was believed that the child would have finished school and started on a career. At the very least, the inheritance wouldn’t serve as a disincentive to finishing school or getting a good job. At age 25, or there abouts, the trust would end and the inheritance would be given outright to the child. With an incentive trust, the inheritance is not only held in trust for much longer period of time, it also comes with certain strings attached. For example, the trust may provide for a gift to the child of $50,000 or so upon graduation from college. It may also provide for a gift of $25,000 or so as a wedding gift. The incentives can be as imaginative as the furtile minds of the parents - and often are. That’s one of the problems, too! Critics say that incentive trusts can place unreasonable or even unacceptable expectations on the beneficiaries. Professionals who advise parents about incentive trusts need to be more than justs lawyers skilled in the laws of trusts, estates, and taxation. They also need to be skilled in the realm of social behavior so that the consequences of certain incentives are well thought out. What would happen, for example, if a trust provided a dollar-for-dollar match of every dollar earned by a beneficiary where one beneficiary was a higly-successful business person and the other was a struggling artist. In that case, the incentive might be counter-productive. Still, incentive trusts are growing in popularity and you should be aware of the possibilities they provide. For a good general explanation of incentive trusts, take a look at an article entitled “Planning: Handing down values as well as wealth” by Catherine M. Allchin, The New York Times. The article was also published in the International Harold Tribune. Attorney Michael Pancheri is a practicing attorney and the founder and CEO of the Living Trust Network. How to Plant Evergreens in the Fall

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Doug Green Late fall is an excellent time to move or plant evergreen shrubs. If you have to replace some damaged last winter, the prices at local garden centres will never be better and most of the plants will come with guarantees for overwintering success. Try to have the evergreens planted in the next two or three weeks for good survival rates. Woody plants such as trees and shrubs are also easily and successfully planted at this time of year although you have more time (until freezeup) to get them into the ground. Remember the old gardening tip about putting a dollar plant into a five dollar hole when installing your evergreen shrubs. A hole that is significantly larger than the rootball allows those tender roots to shoot out and establish themselves into nice loose soil before the onset of winter. The better the roots establish themselves, the higher your survival rate will be. I generally use a shovel or two of compost into the soil when backfilling the roots. I do not add any fertilizer, the research suggests this is not needed when planting. The old time gardeners used to add bone meal to the planting hole and if this makes you feel better, then add some; it wont hurt and it might help. Compost works for me just fine. The one thing the old time gardeners and I totally agree on is the need to muddify the planting hole after the plant is in the ground. Now, you wont find this word in a dictionary but as long as you turn the hose onto the plant and turn the entire planting area into a swamp, to ensure that each and every root has wet soil around it, then you have muddified your planting hole. Five dollar holes and muddify, its that simple. Keep Back Pain at Bay

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

By Dr. Savitha Suri Introduction Back pain is the most common complaint among adults under 45. Back pain brings their activities to a complete halt and intervenes in the progress of their career. Researchers say that it is really a challenge to a physician to find out the true cause of back pain. Here is a quick take on the anatomy of the human back. Our body depends on the spinal column for structural stability and mobility. We twist, bend and flex with the help of spinal column. The spinal column is made up of 24 vertebrae, 7 in the neck (the cervical vertebrae), 12 in the thorax (the thoracic vertebrae), and 5 in the lower back (the lumbar vertebrae). The sacrum, located just below the lumbar vertebrae, consists of 5 fused vertebrae. The tailbone, or coccyx, with its 3 to 5 fused vertebrae, lies just beneath the sacrum. These vertebrae are placed one on another from skull to pelvis. Spongy discs are present in between vertebrae .The spinal column is tightly wrapped by muscles and ligaments. The spinal cord is enclosed within vertebral canal which is formed by alignment of vertebrae. Acharya sushruta describes anatomy of spinal column as follows.
Prushte trimshat - The number of back bones are 30 (Cervical-7, Thoracic 12, Lumbar- 5, vertebrae fused in sacrum -5 , coccyx -1 ). While describing the joints in spinal column it has been said as “Chaturvimshatihi prishta vamshe.” This means there are 24 joints in spinal column. Maamsaanyatra nibaddhani siraabhihi snaayubhistatha. |
Asthinyaalambanam kritwaa ||
The ligaments and tendons hold the bones and muscles together. Causes for back ache Bones and thighs are mainly occupied by Vata. Vata controls and directs the body movements.Back pain occurs when vata in this region gets aggravated due to unwise physical activities (mithya yoga of karma), exaggerated physical activities (Ati yoga of karma ) or less physical activities (hina yoga of karma). 1. Back ache usually arises from spasm of muscles that support our spine. The muscles supporting spine go into spasm when we lift things unwisely, bending over too sharply, sitting in a unsuitable chair, etc. These type of movements are called as Mithyaa yoga of karma or action in ayurveda. 2. Back pain can be triggered when we sneeze, climb into a car, or bend down to pick up the newspaper. 3. Osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, viral infection, bladder or kidney infection, gynecological problems in women, tumors and trauma may also cause back pain. 4. Lack of motion or hina yoga of karma and bad posture may affect us when we sit or stand for long periods of time. On the other hand repetitive motion or Ati yoga of karma like too much of bending, lifting or twisting also affects our back. 5. Other potential causes for back ache are: Overweight Wearing high heeled shoes Carrying heavy weight The vitiated vata causes stiffness of joints, pain and limits the movements of back. Solutions for back pain 1. Stay calm. 2. A complete bed rest for 24 - 48 hrs relieves back pain in most of the instances. Walk a little every few hours to keep the blood flowing and the muscles toned. 3. Applying vata balancing oil like ksheerabala oil on affected region and Naadi sweda (mild steam bath on affected area ) of affected region relives the pain quickly. See your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: 1. If you are above 50 and sudden onset of severe pain or pain localized to spine. 2. Pain due to recent fall or trauma. 3. Pain in hip and leg. 4. Back pain unrelated to posture. 5. Bowel or bladder control problems. 6. Numbness in the groin or rectal area. 7. Extreme weakness in legs. 8. Unsteadiness while walking 9. Fever or weight loss accompanying the pain. 10. Pain that does not lessen over time even after rest Prevention of back pain 1. Keep the muscles well conditioned by improving sitting, standing, stretching postures. Well-conditioned muscles are less susceptible to injury. 2. Never bend at the waist or stoop to pick up an object.
Instead, lower the body to the level of the object by bending the knees. Grasp the item, hold it close to the body, and raise yourself with your legs while keeping your back straight. 3. Do not lift very heavy objects. 4. Whenever possible, prop yourself up. 5. Lean against a wall or pillar while waiting for a bus or standing in line at the bank. 6. Keep footstools around the house. Alternatively prop up one leg on stool while doing standing chores. 7. Sleep on a firm mattress and find a comfortable position. 8. Wear low-heeled shoes. 9. Standing straight will do wonders for your back. 10. Sit on a comfortable chair that supports the curve of lower back. 11. While sitting for long hours rest feet on a low stool so that knees are above hips. 12. Do not sit or stand in one position for a very long time. Get up periodically and walk for a while. 13. Avoid activities which hurt back. 14. Do not sit in same position for long hours. It may prove hazardous to back. Take break in between and move around. 15. Avoid becoming overweight. Overweight increases the risk of back pain. Tips for software professionals to avoid back pain: 1. Select a correct chair, with a relatively straight back and good lower back support. If the chair doesn’t offer lower back support, keep a rolled up towel or cushion to support the back. 2. Correctly position the chair, keyboard, and monitor. Feet should be on the floor, with knees at hip level; forearms should form a right angle with upper arms; and the computer terminal should be at eye level. 3. Adopt a relaxed, upright working posture and allow the chair to support. 4. Avoid slouching forward or leaning back too far. 5. When you are at work stand up, walk around, stretch forward, backward, and side to side once in 30 minutes. 6. Increased stress and strain enhances the chances of back pain. Hence remember to relax! Yoga and meditation are best techniques to relax 7. Eat healthy food which is rich in fiber. Avoid sweets, oil, soft drinks and overeating to reduce the chances of weight gain. 8. Sex should be avoided during acute stage of back pain as it exaggerates the condition. Ayurvedic Home remedy for backache

The Art of Serving Caviar

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

By A Chatfield Caviars role as the premier delicacy of kings, emperors, and other heads of state stretches all the way back to the Persian Empire and the Cake of Power days of the delectable Sturgeon Roe. Its hard to come by, even harder to pay for, and what many people might not realize, hard to prepare and serve. The most important thing to remember is that when you buy caviar, you have a limited window to use it. Fresh caviar is good for at most four weeks. Though, if you decide to purchase pasteurized product, youll be safe for a while longer. After opening though, youll want to use your caviar as quickly as possible, within a couple days at most. In terms of taste, caviar is a very fickle food. Its incredibly tasteful, evoking every response in the various arenas of your tongue. However, youll want to make sure that when you serve it to guests, you dont disrupt that taste by drowning it out. The best way to serve your caviar is to leave it in the tin, surrounding it with ice. If you try to take it out and pretty it up, you risk breaking the grain and losing the flavors before it even reaches your mouth. Secondly, you want to make sure whatever you serve it with doesnt offset its flavors. As an hors doeuvre it is best served on lightly toasted bread or crackers, usually with butter. You dont want the bread or cracker to be too hard or you will risk losing flavor once more. There is a common misconception that serving caviar with eggs or other strong tastes like sour cream or yogurt is a good choice, but more often than not you only succeed in completely drowning out the taste of your caviar in doing so. In terms of beverage, there are a few different opinions on the matter. Firstly, there is the classical choice of Champagne with your caviar. Many find it to be too sweet though, once again taking away from the taste of the caviar, but the tradition is old and so too is the draw of that tradition. Vodka is another traditional pairing, cleaning your palate each time to taste in full the various flavors. Caviar is a delicacy of the highest order, and accordingly its foreseeable to be confused or even nervous about how best to serve it. There are many aspects to take into consideration; its freshness, its palatability, the after taste, and how strong other flavors come across. Keep all of these in mind when serving to get the most and the best out of your caviar. ***You may use this article on your website as long as the two URLs are hyperlinked. Indoor Orchids

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

By Steve Valentino Orchids are amongst the largest flowering plant families in the world. They are rare and exotic, steeped in myth and romance, and have been the symbols of pure, undying love. There are about 17000 original species of them and many more manmade hybrids. They are of two types. One type grows on the ground, and the other, known as “epiphytes”, grows on tree trunks, branches, and rocky surfaces. Thousands of new hybrids have been created that enhance the natural colors and scents of these flowers. People are so allured by the beauty of these natural wonders that they have ended up dedicating their entire lives to nurturing them. Many grow them indoors, many have greenhouses for them, and some even go out into the wild to help conserve the orchids on the endangered species lists. The epiphytes are the most cultivated orchids and require stringent prerequisites in regards to the light, humidity, and temperature. Orchids are not very sturdy plants and their cultivation requires a constant tending and gardening. At times, they can be grown in artificially created environments with the help of semi-hydroponic mediums. These allow the orchids roots to function normally and allow the plant to be grown indoors within pots or water trays. Each type of orchid requires distinct temperatures, some prefer cooler temperatures and others flourish in temperate or tropical environments. Usually, the orchid is allowed to reach a certain age and size on the branches of a tree; it is then transplanted to a pot with a semi-hydroponic culture. Nearly all species of orchids can be grown in this way. Future flowering of the plants can be prevented by denying the required warmth. The orchids are spoiled due to the most common fault of over watering. Hence, maintaining a good drainage system of the pots and plant beds is essential. The watering rate for healthy growing orchids should be once a week allowing ample time for the potting mixture to dry out completely between irrigation intervals. Orchids provides detailed information on Orchids, Orchids for Sale, Care of Orchids, Growing Orchids and more. Orchids is affiliated with Hibiscus Plant. Mobile Phones: The Infotainment Gets Richer And Richer

Friday, May 16th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Keith_Rickwood]Keith Rickwood Moving away from being mere communication devices, mobile phones of today have become handy tools of entertainment and information. The competition in the mobile telephony world have compelled manufacturers to think beyound traditional usage and to add new features in handsets to increase its functionalities and usability. Newer technologies and constant innovation, on the part of manufacturers, have resulted in availability of mobile phones with multi-capabilities. Just pick up any latest mobile phone available in the market and you are sure to find a camera, music player, browser, e-mail client and the list gets longer and longer. These feature rich mobile phones have replaced many dedicated handsets and have truly become a multi-utility device. Few years back, a handset with a 0.3-megapixel camera would have been a surprise. But with the entry of high resolution cameras(up to 10 megapixel), the imaging capabilities of a mobile phone has taken a leap. In addition, the handsets are endowed with supportive features like digital zoom, Carl Zeiss optics, uploading to live blogs, landscape modes etc. Music phones, not to be left behind, too have become more indulging and are today equipped with high-end capabilities like MusicDJ, Mega Bass, huge memory storage and multiple file formats. Stereo sound effects have put music phones against dedicated music players without compromising too much on the quality. Business phones available in the market have played a greater role in optimizing productivity and managing time of the moving work force. Professionals now can send and receive e-mails, video-calling, work on different documents and give presentations with their handsets. Change Your “Fat Thermostat” to a Healthy Level

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By S.J. Harstad Have you ever watched someone who looks healthy and
slender eating a slice of chocolate cake and wondered how
they stay thin? Part of the story is that a set-point in
the brain keeps their body fat and weight level from
varying much that is, unless they do something that causes
their brain to change the set-point. That’s what happened when I quit smoking. I had been thin
all my life. Then I stopped smoking and gained about 25
pounds! By quitting I had inadvertently triggered a process
that changed the body-weight regulator in my brain. My body started making fat out of everything I ate, whereas
it formerly eliminated excess calories. Stopping smoking is
only one of many major changes that can cause your brain’s
body-weight controls to be altered. Let’s call the weight regulator in your brain a *set-
point,* and a good image for the set-point is the
temperature you set on the thermostat for the heating and
cooling system of your house. If it is set at 71 degrees,
then the temperature doesn’t vary by more than a degree or
two before the thermostat tells the furnace to heat up (or
the air conditioner to cool down). Your brain’s set-point functions much the same way. It
maintains a steady body-weight and body-fat level through a
complex interaction of hormones and metabolic processes. The chemistry of how this works is beyond the scope of this
article. Suffice it to say that if you’ve gained weight or
lost weight, it is because your set-point has moved. And
if you want to lose or gain weight, you can take certain
actions to re-adjust your set-point to a level more
acceptable to you. First, eat the right stuff. This is not hard if you
follow these simple guidelines:
a) minimize sugar and flour-based foods (refined carbs);

b) eat less animal fat, such as butter, cheese, marbled
meat, and eat less fat in general but don’t use low-fat
products like low-fat mayonnaise, because the chemicals
they have to use to make this stuff palatable is hard for
your body to process; just use real mayonnaise, only less
of it;
c) eat complex carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits and
whole grains, which your body recognizes as normal foods
and will process them as fuel, giving you long-term energy. Second, drink the right stuff: water. It supports your
metabolism, helps your systems with eliminating toxins and
other excess. Coffee, tea, sweetened juices, diet or
regular soda, and alcohol do not contribute to your health
nor to your metabolism. Keep consumption of them to a
minimum. Third, do the right kind of rhythmic large muscle exercise
daily, and sustain it for 30 to 60 minutes. If this sounds
like a lot of time, ask yourself, how important is it to
you to be healthy and/or lose weight? You’re not going to re-set your brain’s weight regulator
(the set-point without exercise - it’s that simple. But the
exercise can be a pleasure once you understand which types
to do. Fortunately, your not faced here with push-ups or
lifting weights. In terms of the exercise that will affect your set-point,
‘large muscle’ means especially using your legs. Walking
is the perfect place to start because you don’t need
special skills or equipment. You can also bike or swim or
jog. Whatever you enjoy. ‘Rhythmic’ means something you can do steadily,
repetitively. ‘Sustained’ means without stopping: continuous. 30 minutes is a minimum. Work up to an hour for best results. Get your heart rate up to the level where you are exerting
yourself, but could still carry on a conversation. More
than that level, and you’re not into set-point changing
exercise anymore. Here, no pain no gain is an undesirable
